LAURA CANNELL

Laura Cannell plays a unique brand of swirling chaotic earthiness channelled via the violin and recorder. Her stark compositions wrap around the listener, having the feeling of ancient medieval hymns to earth and sky.

Songs have a tangible folkish rawness to them - the instruments scraping and clattering, screeching as they spiral into frenetic drone inspired pieces which have a liveliness and capriciousness to them. Dramatic and brooding, Beneath Swooping Talons reminds me in places of Sarah Neufeld's 'Hero Brother', Helena Espvall's drone orientated releases and also evokes the sense of spiritual struggle present in much of Nico's later work.

Recommended listening for fans of The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath a Cloud, Christina Vantzou, Nico and Miranda Sex Garden.
