Review: Caliban's Hour

Caliban's Hour Caliban's Hour by Tad Williams
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A short and brilliant evocation of Caliban's existence in the style of John Gardner's 'Grendel', exploring the events of 'The Tempest' from the viewpoint of the monster. In this it strikes more than a passing similarity to 'Frankenstein', as we witness how Caliban is used and abused by his mentor (tormentor to be more apt), Prospero.

Williams is really brilliant writer, I've been a fan of him for a while now. His prose is a cut above other fantasy writers, and finely honed too. He has a wonderful imagination and his metaphors and imagery is perfect for this slim volume.

Highly recommended to fans of Williams' work, and also those who enjoy The Tempest and wish to explore the character of Caliban from a different perspective.
