DARKHER

One of my more recent musical discoveries, Darkher is the alias of Jayn Wissenberg. Hailing from Yorkshire, her latest release 'Realms' which was released last month builds on their existing sound of haunting folkloric tinged doom rock - yet is also a definite development in terms of sonic presence and atmosphere.

Eerie and yet evocative, 'Realms' is melodious, mysterious and menacing - the sludge ridden riffs slowly build in power, charged like lightning amongst thunder clouds - whilst ethereal and at times ghostly vocals drift through the shifting darkness like wreaths of smoke. This record conjures up the image of british myth and legend, forgotten sites of mystic relevance and the lure of the woods and the wild. The promo shots of Wissenberg are just as intriguing as the music, her strikingly long hair and shroud like garments reminiscent of a dryad, wise woman or enchantress from an Alan Garner novel. You can easily imagine she has the ability to metamorphose into an owl or hare, under cover of darkness, of course.
